THE CELTS
The ‘Keltenmuseum’ is located in the largest ancient secular building in Hallein, formerly the headquarters of the salt works, the ‘Saline’. There are over 30 rooms with a whole host of archeological wonders (jewellery, weapons, exquisite crockery) from the Celtic settlements, working areas and graveyards, from the time up until the 4th centrury B.C. The history of what was known as ‘white gold’ is told very impressively in the rooms of audience once belonging to the Salzburg prince bishops. There are three rooms of the prince bishops and 74 oil paintings depicting the working life of salt miners and salt mining operations in general. The Keltendorf is a reconstruction of a Celtic settlement and has been
rounded off with buildings from the medieval period. The lives and work
of the Celts in the mountains is portrayed up until the Middle Ages.
In the simulated Celtic buildings there are exhibits from excavations
carried out in and on the Dürrnberg. In every hut there’s more to discover
about the life of the Celts. At the moment all that can be seen are the
display excavations and a high spout jug.
We particularly recommend the ‘Salzwelten Card’. This enables holders
to visit the Salzbergwerk mines, the Celtic village and the Celtic museum
in Hallein.
