The Salzwelten discovery exhibition in Bad Dürrnberg near Hallein offers a fascinating insight into the history of the legendary Dürrnberger salt mines.
This journey into the history of this salt mountain allows visitors to hear, touch and see the world of salt with all the enjoyable surprises it has in store.

The Celts had already started mining salt from the Dürnnberg 2,500 years
ago. A peek at these ancient caves and caverns helps us to imagine just
how strenuous the search for salt was in those days. Each individual hut
and cottage in the Salinas village tells the story of the hard working lives
of the Celts. Celtic discussions can be heard in the ‘Versammlungshaus’.
In the burial chamber there is a Celtic prince in his chariot with his weapons
and the artefacts that would accompany him.

A small cave train whisks visitors into the interior of the mines. There are
slides built which catapult visitors down to the legendary underground
lake Salzachsee.

A raft carries the visitors across the lake in a storm of flashing light effects
and thunderous music; an entertaining way of learning about salt mining,
the salt trade and its influence on our history.
